Handsome

Last night I went to Fibbers for the first time in ages to see The Handsome Family. They were supported by the equally intriguing and eccentric Napoleon IIIrd and Boss Caine. I caught the end of Boss Caine’s set but have seen them many times before anyway - they seem to support just about every act I go and see in York. Then came the idiosyncratic Boney accompanied by a host of old tape devices and his guitar. He was unexpected and very entertaining.

Hansome Family Values

After what seemed an age clearing the stage of the supports paraphernalia we were treated to an hour and a half of Brett and Rene Sparks’ blend of Gothic and often macabre country music. A few I knew from their last album The Last Days Of Wonder, some older stuff and one or two new ones. The music was melodic, dark, sometimes depressing, the banter was amusing and eccentric and Brett Sparks’ deep warm vocals were a treat.
